Description

Cropped and geometrically aligned reproduction of an engraving in the German periodical Das Buch für Alle: illustrierte Blätter zur Unterhaltung und Belehrung für die Familie und Jedermann, volume 10 (1875), issue 3 (Heft 3), printed p. 61. It shows two people tied to a tall stake above a fire, with a crowd and mounted onlookers, buildings, palm trees and mountains.

The composition matches H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 1, page 4, item 1. The printed German caption begins “Die Verbrennung” and refers to the accompanying text on p. 62. The image bears the signatures “RENÉ VICTOR MEUNIER” and “SMEETON-TILLY”; their individual roles are not independently assigned here.

File and dating

Processed JPEG, 2211 × 3112 pixels. A working crop of the digitized leaf was cropped around the outer printed frame with a small paper margin and aligned by a four-corner perspective transform, using one bicubic resampling. The whole engraved composition, both printed signatures, the German caption and the printed frame are retained. No colour or tonal adjustment, sharpening or reconstruction was applied. The running journal header, page number and excess outer margins are outside this crop.

This file reproduces the German print in the volume labelled 1875. The same composition is also known as “Mexique — Exécution de deux sorciers” in L'Illustration, no. 1637, 11 July 1874, printed p. 29. The present scan is not that French page. No exact calendar publication day for the German issue, or unverified first publication of the composition, is claimed here.
