Summary
Description
A Buddhist Ordination in Ceylon, numbered scene 3: the robed candidate taking vows before the chapter. Harper's Weekly, vol. XX, no. 999, 19 February 1876, printed p. 152. Date, page, title and three numbered scenes are visible on the complete source page; volume/issue number follow the archive catalogue.
Matches the right/lower portion of the composite illustration on HPB-SB-1-91. The seated monk on an oval cushion, fan, paired cups, Buddha picture, foreground heads, smoke and architectural strokes match. This source identifies only this component: the city/elephants at left, larger bowed figure, Theosophical emblem and overlaid text belong to the album montage and are not attributed to this scene. The picture of Buddha belongs to scene 3, not the separate portrait numbered 2.
The complete individual composition and its original scene number are retained. The three legends and common title are printed together below the whole series; they remain available on the linked complete page and have not been spliced onto this individual crop. A monogram and engraved marks, where present, are retained without assigning an unverified artist or engraver. The particular physical copy used for the album cutting and first publication are unestablished. An earlier matching witness was found in The Graphic, 15 January 1876, p. 64; this file reproduces the later Harper witness, not that digital scan.
