Description

Indian Tent Scene. Wood engraving showing a wooded camp with conical tents and groups of figures. A matching impression is published in Henry T. Williams, ed., The Pacific Tourist: Williams' Illustrated Trans-Continental Guide of Travel (New York: Henry T. Williams, 1876), printed p. 27. The artist and engraver have not been identified.

Source

The Pacific Tourist, 1876, printed p. 27, digitized copy made available by Internet Archive, identifier pacifictourist1876will, scan leaf n30.

The complete source-page JPEG was retained unchanged. Thanks to Internet Archive and the contributing collection for making this historical source freely available. The contributing institution has not been independently identified in this preparation packet.

File and processing

PNG, 1800 × 2040 pixels, with a transparent crop outside the irregular illustration and its caption. Prepared from the retained 2467 × 3443 RGB source-page JPEG. The complete lower-left extension of the drawing and the original printed caption are preserved.

The four corners of the main printed frame in the source are (298,369), (2046,388), (2039,1947), and (289,1949), clockwise from the top left. A perspective alignment maps them to (30,30), (1770,30), (1770,1580), and (30,1580), with one bicubic resampling. In the resulting image, a geometric crop follows the polygon (0,0), (1799,0), (1799,1675), (850,1675), (850,2039), (0,2039). Areas outside this polygon are transparent. The transparency excludes the adjacent prose below the caption at the lower right; it does not replace that area with invented paper.

No colour or tonal correction, sharpening, restoration, retouching or reconstruction was applied. The original paper colour inside the crop is retained. Source-page JPEG SHA-256: b9529e722dddff9787269e41878e2b1762cd2af7619a12348be709b10342801a.

Dating and limitations

The 1876 book is the earliest matching publication located in this research. Its caption differs from the scrapbook caption, so it does not establish the physical source of the scrapbook clipping or the first publication of the engraving. No artist or engraver is inferred from an uncertain signature.
