Summary

Description

King Winter Out of His Element: King Winter and the Clerk of the Weather, matching H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 1, page 148, item 8. The figure poses, holly crown and clothing where present, fine engraved lines, surrounding objects and lettering match. The words following the colon are a descriptive label for this crop, not a separately printed historical title.

From Fun, 16 January 1875, printed p. 28. The full physical page prints this date, folio and the heading KING WINTER OUT OF HIS ELEMENT. Seven existing album cut-outs (I148:6–8 and I149:1–4) derive from this one source page and its three broad compositional rows; these details are not presented as seven independent full-page designs. Their order in Sources follows the album, which rearranges the original story. The complete corresponding scene and its original printed caption are retained, including the surrounding original strokes. The page headline and other scenes remain visible in the complete source page.

The matching collected design appears on p. 102 of J. F. Sullivan, The British Working Man by One Who Does Not Believe in Him, and Other Sketches (London: Fun Office, 1878). That physical collected title names J. F. Sullivan and credits Dalziel Brothers for the book's engravings; this is not treated as a separately proved engraver credit for the 1875 journal impression. No first-publication priority or physical copy used for the album cutting is claimed. Album images, text, notes and metadata remain a separate witness.

File and processing

Lossless grayscale PNG, 1330 × 930 pixels. The source itself is grayscale; no original paper colour is asserted. Native JP2: 2325 × 3216 pixels, 934605 bytes, SHA-256 ac35b44c085a6e806a98685749ec161f5db6ac77d9f3cabc7d1f6daa5bcc9fed.

The local printed caption was checked and sufficiently level; no rotation or resampling. Alignment was measured from 47 inlier printed-caption glyph bottoms in the native rectangle (240, 1145)–(1515, 1225), angle -0.125756954 degrees. For middle-panorama details the shared caption supplies the alignment reference, even though that caption is outside the individual detail crop. Final native-coordinate crop (200, 295)–(1530, 1225), right and bottom exclusive. All pixels lie within the original source-supported area. No added canvas, enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction. Final pixels were independently reproduced from the unchanged native JP2; original scan marks and slight page irregularities remain.
