Summary

Description

A Native Girl in Manilla. Wood engraving showing a standing woman carrying a vessel on her head, with one hand at her waist and a large leaf at her side. The letters L.P. appear at the lower right; the artist and engraver have not been securely identified.

The composition matches H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 1, page 150, item 3, where the printed caption is AN INDIAN GIRL. The different book caption is recorded as a publication fact; it does not independently establish the identity or origin of the depicted woman.

Dating and limitations

The same composition has been verified on printed p. 44 of the 1882 edition, the earliest matching publication located in this research. The present file comes from the later 1902 copy for its natural paper colour. Neither edition establishes the physical source or date of the scrapbook clipping, nor the first publication of the engraving. The scrapbook image and its caption are preserved unchanged.
