Summary
Description
The Fighting Cocks and Eagle — H. L. Stephens, as credited in the printed caption, issue contents and signature. From The Riverside Magazine for Young People, vol. IV, no. 6 (whole no. XLII), June 1870, unnumbered frontispiece facing printed p. 241. The title is not assigned the page number241: that number belongs to the following body page. The lower left printed reference associates the subject with Aesop's Fables; the lower right refers to The Settle.
Matches H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 1, page 160, item 2: eagle's wings and bent head, upright crowing cock, second cock and small birds below, detailed foliage, flower group and original engraved strokes agree. The album cutting omits the caption and has its own crop and later newspaper context. This is an earlier matching impression; the actual publication/physical copy from which the scrapbook cutting was taken, first-ever publication and engraver's identity are not established by this witness. No album image, text, note or metadata is changed.

Rights
Public-domain historical illustration published in the United States in 1870, with the date verified on the physical issue wrapper and contents. The exact volume's opening Google notice identifies its public-domain digitization project, requests non-commercial use, preservation of the Google watermark/attribution, and observance of applicable copyright. The Digitized by Google watermark is retained intact within this crop; the source is used here for this non-commercial scholarly presentation. No CC0, Public Domain Mark or other Creative Commons licence is attributed to this particular scan. This does not identify the archive's copy as the physical album carrier.
File and processing
JPEG display derivative, 2900 × 4220 pixels, RGB. The lossless aligned 3450 × 5020 master is preserved as
. The wiki cannot thumbnail that PNG because it exceeds the server's 12.5-megapixel limit. The source is the archive's supplied full-size JPEG, 3942 × 5759 pixels, 2598704 bytes, SHA-256 61c03ecd872e2bc1523c073f4f694be9e7ad0e499568d3170bbf950118fb9b7c; it is a processed access representation, not an original camera file. Its white paper treatment and colour/fringing artifacts are retained; this is not presented as a natural-paper-colour scan.
One 0.897318553-degree clockwise bicubic alignment correction on the complete source canvas without expansion, measured from 24 inlier title-glyph bottoms in native rectangle (1100,4870)–(3000,4965). Full-resolution master crop (350,560)–(3800,5580), right and bottom exclusive. Complete illustrated scene, signature, available printed captions and Google's original watermark retained. The larger lower margin is intentional to preserve the attribution. Original scan-edge defects remain; no missing lettering was reconstructed. Source-supported-area mask minimum 255 and independent master pixel reproduction checked. The aligned crop was downsampled once with Lanczos to 2900 × 4220 and encoded as JPEG quality 98, chroma subsampling 0; this is a display derivative, not a claim of unchanged source pixels. Independent encoding reproduction matched the complete JPEG bytes. Both derivatives retain the Google watermark. No added canvas, enlargement, tonal or colour adjustment, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction.
