Summary
Description
Fig. 10—Harmony of Temperament. Frederick “the Great.” Historical engraved portrait of Frederick II of Prussia, in Nelson Sizer, How to Teach According to Temperament and Mental Development; or, Phrenology in the School-Room and the Family (New York: S. R. Wells & Company, 1877), printed p. 49. The title page and printed page were checked directly. The artist and engraver have not been established. The phrenological caption is retained as a historical label.
The portrait's individual engraving lines, clothing details, figure number and wording match H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 33, item 5. This book sets the caption on three lines, while the scrapbook caption occupies two lines. The title is not evidence that the book copy was the particular physical source of the clipping; the first-ever appearance of the portrait is not established.

- Exact original JP2 camera image used, archive filename howtoteachaccord00size_orig_0059.jp2. The public scandata maps leaf 59 to printed p. 49 and specifies the initial 90-degree orientation. The title page is leaf 11, where the printed year is 1877.
- Published original-camera archive listing. Only the relevant page and title image were downloaded; the complete archive was not downloaded.
- Library/Internet Archive metadata.
This scan was selected after direct comparison with a softer colour copy from the Wellcome Library and a monochrome journal witness. The natural colour of the paper and the original marks are retained. Thank you to Yale University's Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Open Knowledge Commons and Internet Archive for preserving this book and making the scans freely available.
File and processing
PNG, 494 × 654 pixels, RGB. Source: the archive's original camera JP2, 4368 × 2912 pixels, 897740 bytes, SHA-256 e0f1691f2841e35769fcf4ba0f3cb0a01e55b8b0125925e9850f7bce3f2c9ab2. This is not the smaller JPEG BookReader rendering or processed page image.
The source was oriented 90 degrees clockwise by an exact pixel transpose, without resampling, producing a 2912 × 4368 pixel image. The complete portrait and its printed three-line caption were cropped from coordinates (1305, 1010)–(1805, 1670) in that upright image. The crop was then aligned 0.49 degrees counter-clockwise with one bicubic resampling and trimmed to (6, 6)–(500, 660) in the expanded 506 × 666 pixel crop. Right and bottom bounds are exclusive. A source-area mask confirms that all output pixels lie inside the original image. Adjacent prose is excluded and remains available on the complete source page.
No enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied.
