Summary

Description

There are some notable nooks and bluffs along the bayou. Two people in a small boat on Buffalo Bayou, near Houston, Texas, beneath overhanging trees. The figures, boat, oars, branching trunks, bank, reflections and engraved hatching match the scrapbook cutting. The book's complete rounded upper composition and printed caption are retained; the scrapbook covers the upper part with a separate blue ornamental strip. The blue strip and handwritten album additions are not part of this source image.

Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), chapter X, Buffalo Bayou—A Norther, printed p.112. The visible running head and surrounding text identify Buffalo Bayou and Houston. The book's publication date is 1875; the copyright verso gives 1874, Scribner & Co. The volume-wide credit to original sketches by J. Wells Champney does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this image. No individual attribution is made here.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 52, item 1. This is a matching book witness; the first appearance and the physical source copy of the scrapbook cutting have not been established.
