Summary
Description
The Sleeping Congregation—Hogarth. A nineteenth-century magazine reproduction after Hogarth: a preacher in the pulpit and a largely sleeping congregation, with church windows, heraldic decoration, books, an hourglass and a watch. All figures, windows, decoration, pulpit, objects, hatching and caption match the scrapbook. The journal caption explicitly credits Hogarth. This is the1875 magazine reproduction, not an original eighteenth-century impression; its reproduction engraver is not securely identified here.
From Caricature in the Hogarthian Period, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LI (51), no. CCCI (301), June1875, printed p.43. The actual issue opening explicitly prints June1875 and no.301; the volume title prints LI. The repository headline Volume29 is inconsistent with the printed volume and is not used here.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume3, page210, item2. This witness does not establish the first-ever appearance or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook.
