Summary

Description

Sir Robert Walpole Paring the Nails of the British Lion. A magazine reproduction accompanying James Parton's article: a standing man with a sword rests one hand on a seated lion; another man works on its claws, with regalia on the ground. Figures, gestures, lion, weapons, regalia, hatching and full printed caption match the scrapbook. The album's handwritten comment about Beaconsfield is a later annotation, not the source caption. This witness is the 1875 magazine reproduction; the earlier prototype's date and artist are not securely established here.

From Caricature in the Hogarthian Period, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LI (51), no. CCCI (301), June 1875, printed p.48. The actual issue opening gives June 1875 and no. 301; the printed volume and issue take precedence over inconsistent catalogue headings.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 229, item 2. This witness does not establish the first-ever appearance or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook.
