Summary

Description

Haunted Chamber. A bedroom interior accompanying General Egbert L. Viele's article: a curtained bed, upholstered chair, small table with a candle, chest and mirror. Bed, curtains, furniture, wall and floor hatching match the scrapbook. The source prints only the short caption Haunted Chamber; the longer album title is handwritten. Viele is the article author, not an established artist credit. The artist and engraver are not securely identified here.

From The Knickerbockers of New York Two Centuries Ago, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LIV (54), no. CCCXIX (319), December 1876, printed p.36. The actual issue opening gives December 1876 and no. 319; the printed volume and issue take precedence over inconsistent catalogue headings. The volume 54 bound range is December 1876 to May 1877, catalogued as 1877; the issue date used here is December 1876.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 235, item 2. This witness does not establish the first-ever appearance or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook.
