Summary
Description
Actieuse Nacht-Wind-Zanger met zyn Tover Slons. A magazine reproduction accompanying James Parton's article: a caricatured night share-crier carrying a magic lantern and staff. The face, hat, costume, lantern, staff, Dutch lettering and number 2 match the scrapbook. The journal identifies the subject as a caricature of John Law and his bubble schemes and dates the prototype Amsterdam, 1720. That is not the date of this 1875 reproduction. The English explanatory caption, absent from the album cutting, is retained here. The prototype's artist and reproduction engraver are not securely identified here.
From Caricature in the Hogarthian Period, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LI (51), no. CCCI (301), June 1875, printed p.36. The actual issue opening gives June 1875 and no. 301; the printed volume and issue take precedence over inconsistent catalogue headings.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 235, item 4. This witness does not establish the first-ever appearance or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook.
