Summary

Description

British Idolatry of the Opera Singer Mingotti.—1756. A caricature of an opera singer elevated on a table, with three figures below, musical books and a cat. The figures, costumes, gestures, furniture, books, cat, printed caption and four-line verse match the scrapbook. The journal dates the prototype 1756; this is its 1875 magazine reproduction, not an eighteenth-century impression. The earlier artist and this reproduction engraver are not securely identified here.

From Caricature in the Hogarthian Period, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LI (51), no. CCCI (301), June 1875, printed p.49. The printed issue opening supplies the issue number and date.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 250, item 3. This witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
