Summary

Description

Great Head. Moonlight over a rocky coastal headland. The moon, clouds, crags, shore and foreground fissures match the scrapbook. The surrounding chapter identifies Marblehead; this is not the different Great Head at Mount Desert. The handwritten album note about two spirits or suicides belongs to the scrapbook layer and is not the original print caption. Original adjacent book prose wraps below the engraving at the lower right and is retained without masking or replacement paper. The individual artist and engraver are not securely identified here. Samuel Adams Drake is the book’s author, not an established picture credit.

From Samuel Adams Drake, Nooks and Corners of the New England Coast (New York: Harper & Brothers, [c1875]), printed p. 229. The scanned copy has an undated title-page imprint and is catalogued [c1875]; its copyright verso explicitly reads 1875. The impression date is not separately printed. This matching book reproduction does not establish the first appearance or the physical copy from which the scrapbook cutting was taken.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 258, item 1.

Caption alignment was measured before and after processing. The composition, printed caption, natural paper colour, marks, stains and show-through are retained. No added canvas, enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied. PNG compression is lossless; the source JPEG remains unchanged.
