Summary
Description
Out of the World. A frightened man drops a book and umbrella among an assembly of animals, with turtles carrying signs, monkeys, an elephant, camel, kangaroo, lizard, frog and birds. All figures, objects, lettering, frame and F. S. Church del. signature match the scrapbook illustration. The museum photograph shows a printed cutting mounted in an album, not a preparatory drawing. Its outer mounting-paper edge is excluded from this crop; the complete printed picture frame and signature are retained. The separate scrapbook caption Facts, not Fables is not part of this museum cutting.
A printed cutting catalogued by the museum as 1878, illustrated by Frederick Stuart Church. The same composition is independently confirmed in G. Washington Æsop's Fables (New York: The World, 35 Park Row, 1878), unnumbered frontispiece. The book title is dated 1878; its copyright notice is dated 1877. The catalogue status is Research in Progress. The museum date and the matching book do not prove the first publication or the physical source copy used for the scrapbook cutting. The engraver is not securely identified here.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 12, item 1. The scrapbook image, text, handwriting and existing editorial notes remain a separate witness.
