Summary
Description
View from Lookout Mountain, near Chattanooga. A view over the winding Tennessee River from a cliff beside Chattanooga: a small building and three figures stand at the left edge of the precipice. The building, figures, cliff edge, river bends, landscape and hatching match the left matrix of the scrapbook collage. The scrapbook joins this independent illustration to Umbrella Rock; the book does not contain a single combined wide image.
Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.536. The title credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular composition. The engraved signatures are retained. The copyright verso is dated 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed publication date 1875.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 18, item 2 (left). The two independent compositions are shown in scrapbook order, left View from Lookout Mountain followed by right Umbrella Rock. This book witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
