Summary

Description

Umbrella Rock, on Lookout Mountain. Two figures stand on the projecting upper slab of Umbrella Rock, above a stack of eroded rock layers on Lookout Mountain. The figures, slab outlines, lower rock layers, vegetation, hatching, signatures and printed caption match the right matrix of the scrapbook collage. This is a separate source image, following the left-hand View from Lookout Mountain in scrapbook order.

Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.537. The title credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular composition. The engraved signatures are retained. The copyright verso is dated 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed publication date 1875.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 18, item 2 (right). The two independent compositions are shown in scrapbook order, left View from Lookout Mountain followed by right Umbrella Rock. This book witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
