Summary

Description

Antiquaries Puzzled.—London, 1756. Four antiquarians examine a stone with an oddly divided inscription, beneath trees. The figures, gestures, inscription line breaks, trees, hatching and caption match the scrapbook. The source caption dates the prototype London, 1756; that is not the date of this 1875 magazine reproduction. Its artist and engraver are not securely identified here.

A reproduction in Caricature in the Hogarthian Period, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LI (51), no. CCCI (301), June 1875, printed p.50. The bound volume covers June to November 1875; the printed issue opening supplies June 1875 and no.301. No first-publication claim is made.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 54, item 2. The scrapbook image, text, handwriting and existing editorial notes remain a separate witness.
