Summary
Description
The Raven: man beside a Gothic window. A man turns left beside a small table and a Gothic window in a circular composition, with one hand on the table and the other on a chair. The face, posture, hands, table legs, chair, window, drapery and hatching match the scrapbook. The external source retains the SCATTERGOOD signature at lower right. The figure is a man; no portrait identity is assigned.
From Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven (Philadelphia: Tyndale, Mitchell & Co., No.707 Chestnut Street, undated), printed p.3, raw leaf4. The physical cover credits the wood engravings to SCATTERGOOD, and this engraving is signed SCATTERGOOD. A separate original draughtsman is not established here. The cover has no printed year. A handwritten promotional note on its verso ends Christmas 1870; this dates the use of this copy, not a printed impression year. The music page separately prints a copyright entry in 1865 by D. Scattergood. The repository catalogues the pamphlet as1865; that catalogue date and the music copyright are not silently substituted for an impression date. This exact witness does not establish the physical impression used for the scrapbook cutting or the first appearance of the woodcut.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume4, page107, item1. The album image, printed album caption, handwriting, notes and transcription remain separate witnesses and are not altered.
