Summary

Description

The “Grand Chasm,” Tugaloo River, Northern Georgia. A tall view into the Tugaloo River chasm in northern Georgia, with a pine on the cliff at upper left, steep rock faces, trees below, low sun rays and a bird over the gorge. The tree, cliffs, sunlight, bird, signatures and hatching match the scrapbook illustration. The book caption differs from the shorter scrapbook title Grand Chasm—Tugaloo River. Its second caption line, Page 524, is an internal cross-reference; the illustration itself is printed on page 522. An earlier exact witness is recorded in Southern Mountain Rambles, Scribner’s Monthly, vol. VIII, no.1, May 1874, p.25. The present file uses the natural-colour 1875 book scan, and does not establish the physical source copy of the scrapbook cutting.

Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.522. The title credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular composition. The engraved signatures are retained. The copyright verso is dated 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed publication date 1875.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 119, item 1. This exact 1875 book witness does not identify the physical source copy used for the scrapbook cutting or establish the first publication.
