Summary
Description
“Rock City,” Lookout Mountain. A narrow passage between layered rock formations on Lookout Mountain, with trees, a fallen trunk and a small figure among the rocks. The rock outlines, branching trees, trunk, figure, signatures and hatching match the scrapbook image titled View in Rock City. The book caption differs and includes the internal cross-reference Page 537; the illustration itself is printed on page 539. An earlier exact witness is recorded in Southern Mountain Rambles, Scribner’s Monthly, vol.VIII, no.1, May 1874, p.12. The present file uses the natural-colour 1875 book scan; the physical source copy of the scrapbook cutting is not established.
Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.539. The printed title credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular illustration. The copyright verso is dated 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed publication date 1875.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 145, item 2. This witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
