Summary

Description

A Negro Cabin on the bank of the Tennessee. A timber cabin beside the Tennessee, with a porch, figures at the doorway, a child and animals in front, trees and clouds. The roof, porch supports, figures, animals, trees, clouds, signatures and hatching match the scrapbook image titled Negro House in Tennessee. These historical printed titles differ. The book caption also contains Page 542, an internal cross-reference; the illustration itself is printed on page 544. An earlier exact witness is recorded in Southern Mountain Rambles, Scribner’s Monthly, vol.VIII, no.1, May 1874, p.16. The present file uses the natural-colour 1875 book scan; the physical source copy of the scrapbook cutting is not established.

Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.544. The printed title credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular illustration. The copyright verso is dated 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed publication date 1875.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 162, item 1. This witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
