Summary

Description

A Woman of the Lower Ranks of Cuzco. A woman seen from behind in a Cuzco street, wrapped in a shawl over a striped skirt, with an arched doorway and balcony at left, walls at right and a foreground shadow. The woman, clothing bands, architecture, shadow, sky and linework match the scrapbook captioned Cuzco Costumes—Woman of the Lower Order. The English book caption differs. The lower illustration on the same source page is a different woman in profile and is not included.

Paul Marcoy, Travels in South America from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, vol.I (London: Blackie & Son, Paternoster Buildings, E.C.; Glasgow and Edinburgh, 1875), printed p.241, upper illustration under the heading Acopia to Cuzco. The physically read title credits 525 wood engravings drawn by E. Riou and ten maps from drawings by the author; that is a book-level credit, not proof of the individual engraver or the immediate scrapbook carrier. An earlier exact witness is recorded in Le Tour du Monde, 1863, first half-year, p.278, captioned Femme du peuple, à Cuzco.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 163, item 3. The scrapbook image, handwriting, notes and transcription remain a separate witness. This matching composition does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.

Lossless 90-degree transpose clockwise, followed by the documented page crop (260, 584)–(2618, 4022). This is the original camera file, not the previously retained processed page JP2. Both representations are preserved in the research dossier; the original-camera crop is not claimed to provide a large increase in resolution. Illustration crop (635, 480)–(1675, 1595). One bicubic alignment correction of 1.640242 degrees counterclockwise, measured from the printed illustration caption baseline. Final trim (18, 18)–(1022, 1097); right and bottom bounds are exclusive. No added canvas is included. The complete relevant composition, printed frame where present, title and caption are retained. Original paper colour, source marks, show-through and scan artefacts remain. No enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied. PNG compression is lossless. The complete source is linked above.
