Summary
Description
The Eastern Question—H. M. Abdul-Aziz Khan, Sultan of Turkey. A standing portrait of Abdul-Aziz Khan, Sultan of Turkey, wearing a fez, decorated uniform and sash, with a hand resting on a sword. The face, beard, headgear, two star-shaped decorations, round medal, sleeve ornaments, fingers, sword, railing, dome, minarets and hatching match the scrapbook. The full composition, frame, small printed marks and caption The Eastern Question—H. M. Abdul-Aziz Khan, Sultan of Turkey are retained. A named artist, engraver or photographic source for this exact impression is not established here.
From The Graphic, vol. XIII (13), no. 333, Saturday, 15 April 1876, printed p. 365. The complete page prints the date, journal title and folio; the separately retained issue front directly prints vol. XIII, no. 333 and the date. The same composition appears later in Harper’s Weekly, 6 May 1876, p. 373, with a shorter caption resembling the scrapbook’s caption. This establishes an earlier located printed witness, not the first publication in all editions or the immediate physical source of the scrapbook cutting. The present Graphic scan has clear facial and clothing hatching but compressed dark tones and white paper values; these are retained. A natural-colour paper witness remains desirable. The first appearance in all editions and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 5, page 109, item 1. Album images, captions, author parameters, articles, handwriting, crossed-out words, notes, metadata, footnotes and prior sources remain unchanged.
