Summary

Description

Schenck's Calendar for 1878, a colour advertising calendar matching H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 3, item 1. The twelve seasonal children, flying pair with flowers and ribbons, hooded children below, emblems on garments, three-column/four-row calendar, roses, gold cartouche and product ribbons match the album design. Individual artist not established.

The printed advertisements name Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup, Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills and give Dr. J. H. Schenck & Son's Philadelphia address. These identify the historical advertisement; its medical claims are not adopted as advice.

Source

L. Prang & Co., Boston, publisher's colour proof. The calendar itself reads 1878; its lower-left imprint reads COPYRIGHT 1877 BY L. PRANG & CO. This is the lower red calendar on the NYPL sheet; the upper floral 1877 calendar is a different album composition and is excluded from this crop.

The New York Public Library, Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs, Print Collection; Publisher's proofs of the publications of L. Prang & Co. Volume 1, shelf MEYK+. Item title: Calendars from 1877 and 1878, depicting flowers and angels. Image 482903, UUID 9fced8a0-c5c4-012f-9434-58d385a7bc34.

The catalogue's aggregate Date Issued of 1876 conflicts with the lower object's printed copyright 1877/calendar 1878 and is retained as a catalogue discrepancy. It does not replace the physical dates. This cleaner colour proof is not claimed to have more native pixels than the album photograph. No TIFF was received or used.

Thank you to The New York Public Library for freely providing the colour proof, full-sheet scan and catalogue.

File and processing

Lossless RGB PNG, 1895 × 2250 pixels, exact crop (1480, 2420)–(3375, 4670) from the received 3438 × 4703 full-sheet JPEG, right/bottom exclusive. The complete lower calendar, small paper margins, printed year, copyright, all figures and ribbons remain. Original scratches, torn corner and pale circular damage near the upper ribbon are preserved.

Eight long central printed-rule measurements give angles from 0 to -0.275°, median -0.086°. The irregular physical outer sheet edges are not parallel to every printed rule. The calendar is already substantially aligned; no additional rotation or perspective reconstruction was applied. No resampling, enlargement, tonal adjustment, colourization, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction. Final decoded pixels independently reproduce the exact source rectangle. Original JPEG retained unchanged, SHA-256 2b3c4f31a99356540cfe354d8afe089ec48540b67f268121de180a9ea6c2f5d3.
