Summary

Description

Thomas A. Edison, the Electrician and Inventor. Bust portrait of Thomas A. Edison in an ornamental rectangular frame. The parted hair, face, moustache, bow tie, coat, surrounding hatching and all four decorative corners match the scrapbook. The complete portrait, frame and two-line caption Thomas A. Edison, the Electrician and Inventor are retained. A named artist, engraver or photographic source for this exact impression is not established here. The scrapbook’s handwritten F.T.S. addition is separate and remains unchanged on the album page.

From The Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated, vol. 66, no. 2, whole no. 470, February 1878, opening page of the issue. The complete native page directly prints the volume, month, year, issue number and whole number. No printed page folio is visible on this opening page; an unverified page number is not supplied.

The decorative masthead separately prepared for the scrapbook page uses a common graphic from the March 1878 issue, with its monthly line excluded. That separate masthead does not date this portrait: the present Edison witness is specifically February 1878. The first appearance in all editions and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 31, item 3. Album images, captions, articles, handwriting, author parameters, notes, metadata, footnotes and prior sources remain unchanged.
