Summary

Description

Mission Ridge, near Chattanooga, Tennessee. A view of Mission Ridge near Chattanooga, Tennessee. The foreground rocks and plants, trees on both sides, irregular tall central trunks, wooded hills, birds and clouds match the scrapbook’s composition. The full picture, surrounding rule, small printed marks and caption Mission Ridge, near Chattanooga, Tennessee. [Page 528.] are retained. Page 528 in that caption is an internal cross-reference; this illustration occurs on page 527 in the book’s page sequence. No individual artist or engraver is assigned from the volume-wide Champney credit or unidentified marks.

From Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), chapter LIX, page 527 in the book sequence. The title page directly prints the author, publisher, place and 1875. This chapter-opening page has no printed folio; the exact source scandata maps raw camera leaf 539 to page 527. The bracketed Page 528 in the illustration caption is a separate internal cross-reference. The title’s credit to original sketches by J. Wells Champney applies to the volume as a whole and does not establish the individual artist of this image.

The same composition is recorded earlier in Southern Mountain Rambles, Scribner’s Monthly, May 1874, p. 7, captioned simply Mission Ridge, as in the scrapbook. This file uses the natural-colour 1875 book witness with its longer caption. Neither the book witness nor the earlier located journal witness proves the physical source copy of the scrapbook cutting or the very first appearance of the image. The first appearance in all editions and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 57, item 1. Album images, captions, articles, handwriting, author parameters, notes, metadata, footnotes and prior sources remain unchanged.
