Summary

Description

Nana Sahib (printed caption). A portrait bearing the historical printed caption Nana Sahib. The feathered and patterned headgear, profile, beard, decorated clothing, hands, weapons, palms, minarets, masonry and hatching match the scrapbook. The complete composition, small printed monogram or marks, and caption are retained. The matching printed image and caption do not independently verify the historical identity of the model. No alternative personal identification is asserted here. The scrapbook’s handwritten comment is separate and remains unchanged.

From The Illustrated London News, vol. 31, 26 September 1857, p. 328. The complete page directly prints the journal title, date and folio. The corresponding issue is recorded separately as no. 880 in the retained primary-issue research record. The accompanying periodical notice says: “The accompanying Portrait is from a sketch of Nana Sahib recently received from India by Major O. Gandini.” This historical source statement is retained without assigning Gandini the role of artist or certifying the model’s identity.

The catalogue creator field reads Milford House; it is not asserted to identify the original 1857 publisher. The physical impression date of the digitized bound copy is unestablished: 1857 identifies the reproduced journal issue. The title Nana Sahib is presented as a printed historical caption, with the model’s historical identity left unresolved. The first appearance in all editions and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 60, item 1. Album images, captions, articles, handwriting, author parameters, notes, metadata, footnotes and prior sources remain unchanged.
