Summary

Description

Ye Bellman. A night watchman carrying a bell and a lantern on a long pole, with a tower above and three ornamental verse panels, an hourglass and a scythe below. The architecture, hanging lantern, bell, watchman's pose, cobbles, signature, lettering and verse panels match the scrapbook cutting. The full engraved border, poem and Abbey signature are retained.

Illustration after Edwin Austin Abbey; verse by Robert Herrick. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's catalogue for the corresponding woodblock, 46.49.81, credits Smithwick & French as engravers. These roles refer to the illustration, verse and engraved block respectively.

Harper's New Monthly Magazine, volume LVII, no. 341, October 1878, p. 688 in the volume's page sequence (New York: Harper & Brothers). No folio is printed on the full-page illustration itself; the exact source scandata labels leaf 704 as page 688, between pages 687 and 689. The bound volume's title page prints June to November, 1878, and the issue opening prints No. CCCXLI—October, 1878—Vol. LVII.

The Met catalogue title gives June 1878; the actual journal issue establishes October. The Internet Archive item's generic metadata date is 1913; the physical volume used here is explicitly dated 1878. Neither conflicting catalogue date is substituted for the printed issue date. The first appearance in all media and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 171, item 4. Album text, images, captions, notes, metadata and previous sources remain unchanged.

Thank you to Internet Archive for preserving this volume and making the colour page scans freely available, and to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its freely accessible object catalogue.

File and processing

PNG, 2020 × 3945 pixels, RGB; the source's natural cream paper colour is retained. Input processed page JP2: 2900 × 4604 pixels, 1241029 bytes, SHA-256 ed19b2c31f0f5851310124cb33c6666e8244d135da315324f072c122acf9cea0.

Exact native pixel crop (450, 335)–(2470, 4280); right and bottom bounds are exclusive. Alignment was checked: the fitted upper frame differs from horizontal by approximately 0.071 degree, within the irregular drawn border. The already aligned source was not rotated or resampled again. Full composition, frame, all three verse panels, signature and meaningful marks are retained. This is a processed page JP2, not an original camera frame or a PDF enlargement. No enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied. PNG compression is lossless; the input remains unchanged.
