Summary

Description

The Pets: a boy seated among trees, with two dogs beside him, a spotted calf lying in the left foreground and another calf standing at the right. The faces, animal poses, coat markings, hat, trunks, ground hatching and surrounding frame match H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 200, item 1. The complete frame and original THE PETS. caption are retained; the album cutting omits this printed caption. This is the same engraved design in a separately scanned copy, not an established physical source copy of the album cutting. Artist and engraver are not independently established here.

From A New England Dairy and Stock Farm, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LVII, no. 341, October 1878, p. 646 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The issue opening prints No. CCCXLI, October 1878 and Vol. LVII. The bound title page prints June to November 1878. Page 646 is corroborated by the normal reader leaf 660 and the independently examined October issue, PDF page 6; the folio is not visibly printed on this illustrated layout. Article authorship is not transferred to the illustration.

Source

Internet Archive, identifier harpersmagazine57alde, ark:/13960/t8w97kr8k. The physical volume bears the Burlingame Public Library stamp; the repository lists Internet Archive as contributor and burlingamepubliclibrary as donor. Its generic 1913 publication date is not the date of this physical volume.

This file uses the separately preserved original camera exposure 662 of the same p. 646. This extra exposure is excluded from the site's normal reading sequence; the normal reader image is leaf 660. The complete picture, caption and surrounding text of exposure 662 were visually matched to p. 646, rather than inferring the page from its filename.

Thank you to Internet Archive for preserving and freely sharing the original colour camera files, and to Burlingame Public Library for the source copy.

File and processing

Lossless RGB PNG, 2355 × 1295 pixels, preserving the natural paper colour. Original camera JP2: 5616 × 3744 pixels, 1633643 bytes, SHA-256 7ab964c7df4352105d4a76811982ebb756e9522c7c4722cfcbbb461a763b78f9.

The frame, all figures, tails and caption are complete; surrounding article text and camera backing are outside the crop. All output pixels are within the source-supported area. No added canvas, enlargement, colour or tonal adjustment, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction. Final decoded pixels were independently reproduced from the unchanged original JP2.
