Summary

Description

The Axenstrasse, matching H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 220, item 3. The two rock openings, distant mountains and sailboat, covered carriage, walking figures, parapet, long poles, foreground basket and engraved strokes match. The complete engraved composition and original printed caption are retained. The rectangular crop also preserves the original printed article text occupying the stepped artwork's recess; this text has not been erased or replaced with artificial paper. The exact engraved design is confirmed; the physical copy used for the album cutting and the artist and engraver are not independently established here.

From Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LVII, no. 341, October 1878, p. 662 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The issue opening prints No. CCCXLI, October 1878 and Vol. LVII; the bound title page prints June to November 1878. The original leaf mapping identifies camera exposure 678 as page 662. The date of this impression does not establish when the scrapbook leaf was assembled.
