Summary

Description

The Ever-present Organ-grinder. A seated street musician with a barrel organ and crutch, two children, two women with parasols, a tree, flag, distant tower and birds. The figure positions, organ, crutch, tree branches, flag, parasols, foreground vegetation and hatching match H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 222, item 1. The complete rounded upper boundary, faint peripheral strokes, printed caption and lower-left J. P. Davis Sc. mark are retained. This attribution applies to this image only; the separate image at item 3 is not identified by this source.

From New York in Summer, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, volume LVII, no. 341, October 1878, printed p. 701 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The source page directly prints folio 701 and the article's running title. The bound volume title page prints June to November 1878; the October opening prints No. CCCXLI. The repository's generic date 1913 is not this physical volume's publication date.

The literal engraved mark is retained without expanding it into an unverified full name. Individual artist and engraver identities have not been independently established here; article authorship is not transferred to the illustration. The very first appearance and the physical source copy used for the scrapbook cutting remain unestablished.
