Summary

Description

Bas-relief on the Left, under the Gateway of Karli. The carved porch of Karli, with two elephants at the left, sculptured figures at the right, arches, balcony, stone panels and foreground rubble. These details, the hatching and the H. CATENACCI mark match H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 8, page 306, item 2, captioned The Porch of Karli. The complete composition, engraved mark and the book's own longer caption are retained. The separate illustration at scrapbook item 1 is not identified by this source.

Louis Rousselet, India and its Native Princes: Travels in Central India and in the Presidencies of Bombay and Bengal, carefully revised and edited by Lieut.-Col. Buckle, new edition, London: Bickers & Son, 1882, printed p. 65. The title page directly prints the edition, publisher and year; the source page prints folio 65. This is a later book witness of the same matrix with a different caption. It does not establish the particular journal or physical copy from which the scrapbook cutting was taken, or the illustration's first appearance. The literal engraved name is retained without assigning an unverified expanded name or engraver identity.
