Description

The Grand Duchess Marie-Alexandrovna. Exact engraved portrait corresponding to H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 9, page 83, item 1 (the right-hand woman in the combined album image). The complete portrait and ornamental frame, where present, are retained. The original printed caption is retained. The individual designer or engraver is not assigned without further evidence.

The Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated, volume 58, no. 3 (whole no. 423), March 1874, printed p. 178. The article is entitled A Royal Pair; the two portraits occur on separate source pages, while the album combines the clipped busts. This confirms an exact primary printing, without asserting the first-ever appearance or identifying the physical copy used for the album cutting.
