Summary

Description

A Stocking Full, by Thomas Nast (1840–1902). A matching print for H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 10, page 80, item 1. Santa Claus is suspended in a large stocking beside a bed and holds a smoking pipe. The cap, face, stocking folds, bedpost, pipe, surrounding hatching and Th. Nast signature correspond to the album illustration.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogue titles this work A Stocking Full (published in “Harper's Weekly,” January 4, 1879), dates it originally published 1879, and describes the medium as relief print and electrotype. This museum witness does not carry the A STOCKING FULL caption printed beneath the album cutting. The matching drawing is established; the particular caption state, physical impression and source of the scrapbook cutting are not equated. The Harper's Weekly issue itself has not been directly reviewed here; no printed page number is asserted. The date of an adjacent scrapbook article is not used to date this print.
