Summary
Description
Charles Robert Darwin. Wood engraving. A later impression of the matching engraved portrait in H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 11, page 341, item 1. The near-profile facing right, individual hair and beard curls, collar and shoulder hatching, oval moulded frame and four fine lattice corner ornaments correspond to the album composition. The artist and engraver are not established in the Wellcome record.
This is a later caption state, not a colour scan of the 1875 magazine page. Its main inscription reads CHARLES ROBERT DARWIN, LL.D., F.R.S., with BORN FEBRUARY 12, 1809 and DIED APRIL 19, 1882 below. The printed death date establishes a lower bound: not earlier than 19 April 1882. The exact year, periodical or other carrier of this particular print is not established.
The earlier matching portrait has been checked on the complete primary page of The Graphic, 27 March 1875, printed p. 301, with caption CHARLES R. DARWIN ESQ., F.R.S. (the caption in the album). The portrait matrix is shared, but complete caption/printing-block identity and the physical source of the scrapbook cutting are not asserted. An adjacent article is not treated as evidence for the portrait's carrier. The page number is 301; 278 is not adopted as the portrait's folio.

File and processing
RGB PNG, 2592 × 2832 pixels, from the original 2622 × 2862 JPEG. One fine 0.18827° clockwise rotation, BICUBIC, on the full source canvas without expansion, measured from the median of nine long upper-frame lines; final crop (15, 15)–(2607, 2847), right/bottom exclusive. Only narrow blank margins removed. The complete outer frame, main caption, birth/death inscriptions, paper colour, stains and print irregularities remain. Paper-support mask minimum255 across the complete final crop; no filled exterior wedges. No enlargement, tonal adjustment, colourization, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction. The original JPEG remains unchanged, SHA-256 6c2daec0ae7cb6c72215e1b16bf0a50f920939741c5daed99c69404d1b9de90e. PNG encoding is lossless after this single geometric resampling. This preserves natural colour and fine hatching; it is not a claim of higher pixel dimensions than the album photograph.
