Source
Нива (Niva), year XIII, no. 4, issued 23 January 1882, first page of the issue, bibliographical p. [73]. This first-page number is not printed visibly; the location is established between the preceding 72 and the following printed 74/no. 4. The date is transcribed as printed, without an unstated calendar conversion. This is no. 4, not the previously considered no. 5.
- Exact complete first page with portrait, issue number and printed issue date.
- Following page, printed 74 and no. 4.
- Internet Archive volume, identifier nivatom0251882, ark ark:/13960/t48q4p74g; the item identifies its uploader as BMK BRZ, which is not the historical artist attribution.
The source page bears a Библиотека «Руниверс» library mark below the page. The portrait crop excludes the separate lower page margin, so that source credit is retained here. Thank you to Runivers, Internet Archive and the uploader BMK BRZ for freely providing and preserving the scans.
The French text beneath the portrait in the album is separate material. Its date is not transferred to this engraving. The matching Niva printing is established, but first-ever publication and the precise physical exemplar of the album cutting are not independently demonstrated.
Rights
Historical photograph-based engraving published in 1882; the underlying published work is public domain in the United States by age. The exact Internet Archive item is openly downloadable, checked 4 November 2026. No specific Creative Commons licence or Public Domain Mark for this digitization is supplied on the examined item page, and none is invented here. The historical photographers' and engravers' printed credits and the scan-provider credit are retained.
File and processing
Lossless PNG, 1310 × 1540 pixels. Input complete page 2598 × 3661 pixels; exact crop (640, 1970)–(1950, 3510), right/bottom exclusive. All portrait hatching, the lower engraved mark and the complete printed caption/photographer/engraver credit remain. The caption and page rules are already horizontal; no rotation, resampling or perspective adjustment was needed. Final decoded pixels were independently reproduced from the exact source crop.
The source has a processed white monochrome background. This is not a natural paper-colour master or an optical-quality claim based on pixel dimensions; a better natural-colour witness remains sought. No enlargement, tonal change, colourization, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction. Only cropping was applied. Portrait display limited to 200 pixels.
