Farewell Blavatsky
It is with some regret that we read the announcement that Mme. Blavatsky is about to leave these regions and depart for the East. Rumor reports that it is there she acquired the marvellous knowledge of which she made so efficient a use in the Theosophical Society. It is fitting that occasionally we should have among us a Mme. Blavatsky and a Colonel Olcott, in order that they may stir the muddy pool of conventionalism. Surrounding such people there will always be a circle of denoucers and depreciators. It has been the case here, and consequently the lady and gentleman have been frequently misrepresented and abused for attaching themselves to a religion of which nothing is known in this country. They have a right, however, to choose their religion for themselves, just as other people have a right to be Baptists or Methodists.
The principal crime charged upon Madame Blavatsky is her having interested herself overmuch in Spiritualism. But the facts are that she had a right to interest herself therein as much as she pleased, provided she paid the various mediums what they asked, or provided they were willing to give her seances at reduced prices or for nothing. Nobody can prove that there is no spiritual power in the universe akin to that which the so-called spiritualism of the day claims to develop. The only regret in regard to this point of the subject is that among the entire host of Spiritualists in the United States so few men and women with great brains and grand natures should be found. When some mighty man of thought shall arise to become a leader in Spiritualism, men only less mighty in thought will join the ranks, simply because he will demonstrate to their reason Spiritualistic truths and facts. A successful appeal to the reason of intelligent and not credulous men is more convincing than dark cabinets, half-lit rooms and court-plastered mouths.
