literary scholar, linguist, critic, publicist; he studied at the historical-philological department of St. Petersburg University (1871-1873), graduated from the Novorossiya University (Odessa, 1873-1876), continued his education abroad (Prague, Paris) where he studied comparative linguistics, Vedas and Zend-Avesta, his first work was "Experience of studying Bacchic cults of Indo-European antiquity in connection with the role of ecstasy at the early stages of development of society" (1883), in 1883-1887 he lectured on comparative linguistics at Novorossiya University, where in 1887 he defended his doctoral thesis "On the History of the Hindu fire cult in the era of the Vedas", which summed up his studies in mythology.
