Summary

Description

Orient, a coastal scene with a windmill, buildings, a man with a rake among reeds, foreground rocks and boats by a landing. The arrangement of the windmill sails, man, rake, rocks, pier posts, roofs and shoreline matches H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 175, item 6. The entire vignette and original ORIENT. caption are retained. The scrapbook cutting omits the printed caption and is irregularly trimmed. This is the same engraved design in a separate scanned copy; the physical copy used for the album cutting is not established.

From Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LVII, no. 341, October 1878, p. 719 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The issue opening physically prints No. CCCXLI, October 1878 and Vol. LVII; the bound title page prints June to November 1878. Page 719 is identified by the source leaf/page mapping and the independently examined complete October issue, PDF page 79; the folio is not visibly printed on this illustrated layout. The artist and engraver are not independently established here. The date of this impression does not establish the date when the album leaf was assembled.

File and processing

Lossless RGB PNG, 2420 × 1240 pixels, preserving the natural paper colour. Original camera JP2: 5616 × 3744 pixels, 1368935 bytes, SHA-256 336c1415d8fac6f652fbd36a2d52b72b541efba2f38b00b68c7240fdad271757.

Lossless 90-degree clockwise transpose, then one 0.755516519-degree clockwise bicubic alignment correction on the complete native 3744 × 5616 canvas, without expansion. The angle was measured from 659 inlier samples along the printed column separator, not from the natural landscape. Final crop (500, 770)–(2920, 2010), right and bottom exclusive. The complete vignette, faint sky strokes, shoreline, rocks and caption remain inside the original supported image area; no added canvas. No enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction. Final pixels were independently reproduced from the unchanged original JP2; crop support is entirely original image data.
