Summary

Description

Photographing Under Difficulties. An outdoor seaside photography scene with a photographer under his focusing cloth, a camera on a tripod, a running boy, a standing man holding up his hat, a second boy and a seated group. The figures, poses, camera, huts, beachgoers, hatching and signs BATHING SUITS and FERRO-TYPE GALLERY ON EARTH match H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 266, item 3. The full scene, faint sky strokes, roof apex, lower-left engraved signature and printed caption are retained.

From New York in Summer, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, volume LVII, no. 341, October 1878, printed p. 700 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The source page directly prints folio 700. The bound volume title page prints June to November 1878; the October issue opening prints No. CCCXLI. The repository's generic date 1913 is not this physical volume's publication date.

Individual artist and engraver identities have not been independently established here; the engraved signature is preserved without an unverified name expansion or role assignment. Article authorship is not transferred to the illustration. The very first appearance and the physical source copy used for the scrapbook cutting remain unestablished.
