Summary

Description

The Shadow on the Hills, Punch, or The London Charivari, volume 75, 5 October 1878, unnumbered cartoon page catalogued as [151]. The complete printed composition corresponds to HPB-SB-8-48, image item 1: turbaned figure and weapons, lion, bear-shaped shadow, rock cracks, ground hatching, printed title and SWAIN sc signature. The same engraved detail is retained without the large white/black losses in the previously examined poor copy. No unsupported expansion of the retained artist's monogram is supplied.

This source preserves the journal heading, issue date, full illustration, printed title and border. It is a matching contemporary printed witness, not proof that this physical copy or this journal issue supplied the particular album clipping. The French text pasted above the album illustration is not attributed to Punch by this match. The album itself remains unchanged.
