Summary

Description

Californian Digger Indians — historical printed caption of the complete seven-head engraving in Robert Brown, The Races of Mankind: Being a Popular Description of the Characteristics, Manners, and Customs of the Principal Varieties of the Human Family, vol. I (London: Cassell, Petter & Galpin, [1873; catalogue date]), printed p. 164. Brown is the book's author; the illustration's artist and engraver have not been established, and the small engraved monogram is not expanded by guesswork. The wording of the historical caption is retained as source evidence.

Matches the four left-hand figures of the cut-out at the lower left of H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 9, page 93. Hair and facial contours, flower wreath, garment folds, pendant, and individual engraved strokes agree. The album contains a partial crop of this one group; this source image shows the complete seven-head composition and its original caption. It is not seven independently counted illustrations. The particular physical copy/printing used for the album cutting and first-ever publication are not established by this witness. Album material remains separate and unchanged.

Source

University of Toronto, Robarts Library, call number AAY-4575, digitized by the Internet Archive: item racesofmankindbe01browuoft, ark:/13960/t9959fv8n. The exact current record, checked 5 November 2026, identifies volume 1, author Robert Brown (1842–1895), publisher Cassell, Petter & Galpin, the Toronto/Robarts copy and bracketed catalogue date [1873]. That date is not treated as a year printed on this illustration page.

The reader URL's page label is offset: the actual printed folio 164 and matching caption in JP2 leaf 0182 establish the page used. A previously inspected adjacent p.163 is not the source of this file. Thank you to the University of Toronto, Robarts Library and Internet Archive for preserving this volume and freely providing the colour scan.

Rights

Public-domain historical engraving from a nineteenth-century volume catalogued as [1873]. The current Internet Archive record reports an earlier copyright-evidence inspection finding no visible copyright notice and an unknown exact publication date, with copyright region US. The bracketed catalogue year and the printed source identity are preserved without converting that note into a more precise date. No Creative Commons licence, CC0 or Public Domain Mark is attributed to this particular scan. The library and digitizer are credited above.
