Aksakov, Alexander Nikolayevich +

Russian author, philosopher and a leading figure among writers on Spiritualism. Introduced to Swedenborg's teachings while at the Alexander Lyceum in St. Petersburg, he turned in the 1860s to the study of Spiritualism, translating and publishing — largely at his own expense — numerous works, including those of Andrew Jackson Davis. In 1874 he founded at Leipzig the monthly ''Psychische Studien'' (continued until 1934 as ''Zeitschrift für Parapsychologie''), dedicated to the scientific investigation of psychic phenomena apart from theory or sectarian bias. His insistence on observed fact over theory closely paralleled H. P. Blavatsky's own attitude toward genuine mediumistic phenomena, and she found in him a sympathetic ally.
