Summary
Description
The State Capitol—Austin. The old State Capitol at Austin, with its cupola, surrounding trees and winding paths. The building, windows, cupola, vegetation, paths and hatching match the upper-right large view in the scrapbook collage. The book caption reads The State Capitol—Austin; the album cutting instead reads The Capitol at Austin. These are matching compositions with different printed captions. The other collage fragments are separate works; neither the bridge nor the narrow upper architectural fragment is attributed to this source.
Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.127. The title page dates the book 1875 and credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular composition. Its engraved signatures, where present, are retained. The copyright verso reads 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed 1875 publication date.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 3, page 241, item 1. This witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
