Summary
Description
Peeping Through. Four children look through the rails of a wooden fence, with hands resting on the timber, vessels above and a climbing plant at the right. The four faces, hands, boards, bucket, bowl, vine and hatching match the scrapbook image. The book caption uses different capitalization from the scrapbook cutting. This matching 1875 book witness does not establish the source copy of the physical cutting.
Edward King, The Great South: A Record of Journeys in Louisiana, Texas, the Indian Territory, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company, 1875), printed p.453. The title credits original sketches to J. Wells Champney for the volume as a whole; this does not establish the individual artist or engraver of this particular composition. The engraved signatures are retained. The copyright verso is dated 1874, Scribner & Co.; that notice is distinct from the printed publication date 1875.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 114, item 4. This exact 1875 book witness does not identify the physical source copy used for the scrapbook cutting or establish the first publication.
