Summary
Description
Hauteville—Victor Hugo’s Late Residence in Guernsey. The house at Hauteville in Guernsey, with roof terraces, windows, a porch, a garden fence, a large urn, trees and a group of figures in the foreground. The house, roof rails, garden, urn, figures, vegetation, hatching and printed caption match the scrapbook illustration. The source caption is retained. The artist and engraver have not been securely identified here. The separate guard-house lower on the same magazine page is not included.
From The Channel Islands, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LI (51), no. CCCI (301), June 1875, printed p.6 (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1875). The printed title and actual issue opening identify volume LI and the June 1875 issue. The repository headline Volume 29 conflicts with those primary identifiers and is not used here. This witness does not establish the first publication or identify the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 218, item 1. The scrapbook image, handwriting, notes and transcription remain a separate witness.
