Summary

Description

Ghaut at Benares. A riverside view captioned Ghaut at Benares. Buildings, two tall minarets, terraces, flights of steps, boats, the foreground standing figure and vessels beside the right-hand wall match the scrapbook. The complete composition, printed frame and caption are retained. No named artist, engraver or photographic source is established here.

Reproduced from The Illustrated London News, vol. LXVIII (68), no. 1906, Saturday, 5 February 1876, printed p. 140. The complete page prints the date and folio; the retained issue cover independently confirms the number, volume and date. The first appearance in all editions and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.

Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 5, page 13, item 1. Album images, captions, articles, handwriting, notes, metadata, footnotes and prior sources remain unchanged.

K. K. Venugopal collection / Digital Library of India / Internet Archive, item dli.venugopal.530, catalogue title Illustrated London News (Jan-June) Vol-068, citation WC -13, identifier Vol-068, ARK ark:/13960/t2p647h17. The catalogue records the personal collection of K. K. Venugopal and upload by Public Resource on 8 April 2020. This is a native processed colour access-scan JP2, not an original camera file. Leaf 138 is physically verified as printed p. 140; the mapping is not inferred solely from a fixed leaf offset.

The catalogue creator field reads Milford House. This is not asserted to identify the original 1876 publisher. The physical impression date of the digitized bound copy has not been established; 1876 identifies the reproduced journal issue.

Thank you to the K. K. Venugopal collection, Digital Library of India and Internet Archive for preserving this volume and making these scans freely accessible.

File and processing

PNG, 4100 × 2969 pixels, RGB; natural paper colour retained. Complete input: 5856 × 8816 pixels, 4445550 bytes, SHA-256 d900abbee1ac4ceaad528ee4b80bed1610f15213eeffebbc99b4d1fbd66b148b.

Crop (40, 4570)–(5850, 8810) in the unchanged source image. One bicubic alignment correction of 0.958349 degrees clockwise, measured from the robust bottom of the long printed picture-frame rule. Final trim (60, 60)–(5750, 4180); right and bottom bounds are exclusive. No added canvas is retained. The complete picture, original frame or surrounding portrait hatching, printed caption and meaningful marks remain. Original paper colour, show-through, folds, stains, printed irregularities and scan artefacts are retained. No enlargement, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching, watermark removal or reconstruction was applied. PNG compression is lossless; the complete access-scan input remains unchanged.

Display copy

This reduced display copy preserves the complete aligned crop. The full-size aligned PNG, 5690 × 4120 pixels, is separately retained as File:SB-05-013-source-1.png, with a direct full-size download. Its SHA-256 is 95bb6a9e39996610b51f0c0da2262bddfe210fa8e92af3388a2fb85cbe444352.

The geometry above describes the full aligned crop. One additional aspect-preserving Lanczos reduction to 4100 × 2969 pixels was applied to that PNG for display. The live wiki preview rejected a thumbnail of the full-size crop with the explicit message File with dimensions greater than 12.5 MP. The reduced copy is below that limit. No additional cropping, rotation, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied. The original aligned PNG and source JP2 remain unchanged.

Rights

Public-domain historical engraving reproduced from the 1876 London journal in a faithful access scan. No separate Creative Commons licence or Public Domain Mark for this exact digitized object was shown in the examined catalogue, so none is assigned. No BSB reuse statement is transferred to this different scan. No modern colouring or reconstructed content is included.
