Summary
Description
The Spirit Island. A wooded island on Lake Tanganyika, with three boats, reeds, grasses and reflected vegetation in the foreground. The island outline, boat positions, masts, foreground canoe, reeds, birds and hatching match the scrapbook image captioned The Spirit Land, Lake Tanganika. The book reproduces the same composition with a different printed caption, THE SPIRIT ISLAND; that caption is retained in this file.
Henry M. Stanley, Through the Dark Continent, volume II (London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1878), printed p.57. The exact title page prints the author, volume, publisher, place and 1878. Individual artist and engraver roles have not been established for this illustration; the book author's name is not assigned as an image credit.
The matching journal witness appears as The Spirit Land, Lake Tanganika in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LVII, no. 341, October 1878, p. 678, in Through the Dark Continent. This file uses the colour book witness and its own caption. The author of the book is not automatically the author of the journal article. Neither witness establishes the very first publication or the physical source copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 171, item 3. Album images, text, titles, notes, metadata, footnotes and previous sources remain unchanged.
