Summary

Description

The Bar, Captree Island. A tavern interior with a man leaning against the counter, a partly visible man behind it and a seated man with his hands behind his head. The window, vacant foreground chair, ceiling beams, counter, figures, floorboards and hatching match H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 272, item 2. The complete engraved frame, printed caption and the marks Abbey and VARLEY are retained.

From Around the Peconics, Harper's New Monthly Magazine, volume LVII, no. 341, October 1878, printed p. 711 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The page directly prints its folio 711. The volume's physical title page prints June to November 1878; the October issue opening prints No. CCCXLI. The repository's generic date 1913 is not this physical volume's publication date.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogues the surviving woodblock as The Bar, from Captree Island (Harper's, New Monthly Magazine, October 1878, p. 711), artist Edwin Austin Abbey, 1878, object 46.49.53. This independently supports the artist and exact journal reference. The mark VARLEY is retained without expanding it into an unverified full name. This upload is the journal scan supplied by Internet Archive, not a museum image; no museum image licence is transferred to it. The first appearance and the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting remain unestablished.
